I recently took a very educational class offered by the City of Flagstaff called the Master Recycler class. I have always been interested in helping save our planet so I was excited to learn more!

You have probably heard the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and as simple as it is, it is very true! In order to keep things out of the landfill, the very best way to start is to reduce and reuse! When someone in my family says “I need or I want…”, we try to stop and think, will we want this tomorrow or in 6 months? Also, we reuse what we have in our home or reuse by shopping at our many wonderful thrift stores. Again when that thought pops into my head “I need or I want…”, I try really hard to look around my house 1st, to see if I already have it or if I can repurpose something!

If you live in the city, we have recycling trucks that pick up your recycling at the curb. There are several drop off locations if you do not have this city service.

When we are done with clothes or other household goods that are still in good shape, we drop them off at Sharon’s Attic,  Full Circle Trade, or the many other wonderful thrift shops we have here in town.

We take our glass downtown to the bins in the parking lot at the bus transfer station. You may pay for this curbside service as well!

We take our plastic bags to the grocery store. And if there is a ziplock back, they prefer the zipper part the be cut off.

If you would like to see what happens to our recycling, you can tour the Materials Recovery Facility on Butler Ave. There is not an actual recycling facility here in town, but the recycling is sorted here and then sent to other facilities to be recycled. Willow Bend is another great place to learn about helping protect our environment!

If you would like to see more about what happens to our waste in Flagstaff, you can tour the landfill. You can also drop off hazardous materials there. There is a cool program at the Hazardous Products Center called the Drop and Swap Reuse Program. You do not have to drop off anything to take something, and you can usually find automotive, cleaning and painting products there.

Katie Woodard
Katie has lived in Flagstaff for 22 years and grew up in North Carolina. She has 10 and 12 year old boys who are certainly an adventure! Her family is by far the most rewarding part of her life. Katie loves hiking and running in our beautiful hills, skiing, river rafting, traveling, health and clean eating (thanks to a whacky thyroid). She is also always taking small steps to clean up our environment, and she is currently learning meditation and just loves learning in general! Katie and her college roommate drove to AZ from VA after college and Katie has only left briefly but Flagstaff is her home for sure! She met her wonderful husband while river guiding in the Grand Canyon. Katie is a family photographer at www.katiewoodardphotography.com, here in Flagstaff and loves capturing the natural love and beauty in families. Her newest fun adventure is co-founding Women Empowering Northern Arizona.
