DIY Squeeze Pouch Recipes for Picky Eaters

Do you have picky eaters in your household? Us too. As much as I would love to say that our kids gladly eat fistfuls of broccoli, that is just not the case. When our kids turned a year old, I was scratching my head and trying to think of creative ways to get them to eat more vegetables. Luckily I learned that they loved a squeeze pouch, and was thrilled to see that many of the varieties from the store have vegetables mixed in with some of their favorite fruits, like bananas and berries.

Some friends told me that a great way to save money is to buy reusable squeeze pouches and fill them with your own concoctions. Here are some combinations that I found our kid’s love (and are unknowingly consuming vegetables…muahaha.)

  • mango, bananas, roasted/steamed sweet potato (I suggest adding some OJ or water to cut down on the thickness)
  • any kind of berry, carrots, spinach, applesauce (this helps with the tartness of the berries)
  • pears, kiwi, kale or spinach
  • additional ingredients: although I have not yet tried it, I know many people mix in cooked quinoa, brown rice powder, oats and other grains for an additional dose of protein and fiber.

Here are some tips to help make the process a little easier:

  • Buy frozen fruits. It definitely helps save time and hassle with prep work.
  • Invest in a good blender. The better the blender, the larger batches you can make and the smoother the mixture will be.
  • Use your child’s favorite ingredient as a base, and then add to that. Our kids love bananas, so I use plenty of them to mask the bitterness of kale.

Give it a try! What veggies would your child happily eat in the form of a squeeze pouch?
