We’ve All Wondered if We’re Bad Moms

We’ve all wondered if we’re bad moms.

  1. Am I a bad mom for putting my kid in preschool full time? He’s too young for that much time away from me. A better mom would know that about her child.
  2. Am I a bad mom for staying home with my kids instead of putting them in preschool? A good mom would make sure her kids have plenty of time to interact with other kids and don’t need to be around their mom all the time to be happy and secure.
  3. Am I a bad mom for getting frustrated when my toddler tantrums? Shouldn’t I be more patient? A good mom would be more patient, take deep breaths, and probably would never get frustrated in the first place.
  4. Am I a bad mom for taking medication/going to therapy/having a mental illness? My kids deserve a sane healthy mom.
  5. Am I a bad mom because I want to go back to school and pursue a full-time career? Even though my kids are used to me staying home with them all the time?
  6. Am I bad mom for breastfeeding my toddler? Will she have a hard time adjusting to other care providers because I’ve coddled her too much? They deserve a mom who knows when to quit.
  7. Am I a bad mom for not breastfeeding my toddler longer? Shouldn’t I have just stuck with it and stuck out the pain and struggle for my kid? They deserve a mom who can nurture them better.
  8. Am I a bad mom for putting my kids in charter school? Are they gonna turn into selfish privileged jerks who can’t function in the real world, need bubble wrap, and think they’re better than everyone else?
  9. Am I a bad mom for putting my kids in public school? Shouldn’t I give them the very best? Our legislators have no interest in providing the best for my kids’ school and their teachers, so shouldn’t I take matters into my own hands? A good mom would make sure their kid has the very best education no matter what.
  10. Am I a bad mom because I don’t own our own home? A good mom would provide stability, space, and place to be truly creative.
  11. Am I a bad mom because my kid doesn’t sleep through the night yet? My other mom friends’ kids all sleep through the night, meanwhile, mine fights bed time, wakes up constantly, and usually sleeps in my bed.
  12. Am I a bad mom for buying my kid / letting my kid use technology? They would be so much better off if we lived off the grid with no TV or Youtube or phones. They’re gonna turn into near sighted screen zombies with arthritis in their thumbs and hunches in their backs.
  13. Am I a bad mom because my kid only eats a few favorite foods? She won’t eat most of the nutritious food I set in front of her, always opting for starch and fruit. A good mom would make the time to cook nutritious meals their kids would definitely eat. She certainly wouldn’t get exasperated before she found the right combination of super foods for her kid.
  14. Am I a bad mom for never maintaining a clean household? A good mom would always have the laundry and dishes done and put away with the floor vacuumed and toys arranged in the most educationally stimulating way. The trash would always be out, the recycling taken care of, the donation piles donated immediately, the toilets always sparkling, and clutter completely out of sight.
  15. Am I a bad mom for wondering if I’m a bad mom? A good mom is effortlessly confident in her ability to raise her children well. She is poised and smiling, and always clean and dressed. She never questions her decisions and knows she’s doing the best things for her children 100% of the time. I will never measure up.

I am a Flagstaff local from toddlerhood. I went to FALA for high school and graduated from NAU with a BA in Secondary English Education. I married my high school sweetheart, and together we’re building our life with our toddler Moira, whom I stay at home with full time. My passion is working with pregnant people during their journey to and through birth and post partum as a birth doula and birth photographer, and I work with another doula in town to provide those services to the Flagstaff community. I dance and perform with a Modern Dance company several times a year, and I teach baby & me music and dance classes around town weekly. I enjoy reading, hiking with friends, and playing Zelda in my spare time.
