Father’s Day DIY Succulent Planter

Father’s Day, Mother’s Day … we’re not really big on them in our house as far as buying gifts goes. We prefer to spend that money on traveling, experiences, or things we can use together as a family, such as home renovation projects. But ever since I became a mother two years ago, Mother’s Day has held a new meaning for me. I’m not sure if my husband feels the same, but each year I try to make something small/unique that celebrates his role in helping shape our tiny human’s future.

DIY Desk Succulent Planter

Our daughter isn’t in school yet, so we don’t have any of those cute kid crafts that are sent home to celebrate these special occasions. So this year I decided to make a desk succulent planter and enlisted my daughter’s help! This is a fairly inexpensive, yet thoughtful gift that is sure to make the dad in your life smile every time he sees it.

Materials you’ll need

  • Wooden planter (we got ours from Target in the craft aisle, $3.99)
  • Paints (we used acrylic paints that I had around the house from Michael’s, $2-$4/tube)
  • Paint brushes (we had these already, but you can also use sponges or your fingers!)
  • Skewers or sticks
  • 2-3 small succulents ($3 each, Home Depot)
  • Printed photos of your child or child/dad together
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Steps

  1. Have your child help you paint the wooden planter. Let them go wild. My daughter started with brushes and moved to a sponge brush and eventually just used her fingers to swirl the paint around. Let dry.
  2. Cut out your child from the printed photos. I have a photo printer at home so I made a collage of photos I wanted to use in Photoshop and printed it on one 8.5 x 11 sheet of photo paper. If you don’t have photo paper or a photo printer at home, you could send a few photos to your local drug store. Make sure to select a few options and different sizes to have on hand.
  3. Attach the photos to the sticks with tape.
  4. Pot your succulents into the wooden planter.
  5. Stick the photos in the planter so that they are popping out.
  6. Water your succulent.
  7. Ta-da!

I think it turned out pretty darn awesome and I know my daughter will be excited to gift it to her daddy on Father’s Day. I chose to use photos from some memories they’ve made together: the first time they went ice skating, one of her dressed in his favorite pajamas of hers (yay Toy Story), and a recent trip to San Diego.

If I remember to do it, I might print new photos out each month and switch them out for some fresh blooms 🙂

This was super fun to make and brings a smile to my face every time I see it.
