Fall Fashion Update: The Snuggle is Real

Is it sweater weather yet? A chilly car-ride in the morning, leaves turning and pumpkin spice everything has me reaching for my favorite cozy toppers and boots. Here’s a simple fashion update to help you freshen up your fall look.

Mad for Plaid

Who doesn’t love a cozy plaid shirt, right? Warm out of the dryer or borrowed from your man’s closet, a plaid shirt layered over a graphic tee that makes you smile is an easy go to. Tie it around your waist over your distressed jeans or leggings with boots for a casual, cozy look.

Want to take it up a notch? You’ll find plaid this fall in unexpected places–on shoes, boots, bags–and with a fresh new twist, like a plaid barn shirt embellished with pearl accents or a little plaid skirt paired with a cropped sweater. Working mommas, make your look professional with a plaid blazer or a high-waisted pair of plaid pants.

The Snuggle is Real

If you’re like me, a soft, oversized sweater is always calling my name. This season, update your cozy collection with a cropped sweater or a chunky, oversized sweater. Either can be flattering on any body shape–if it fits right. Trust the designer and start with your typical size. A chunky sweater should fit your shoulders and your waist but look roomy. Just because you can fit in a size or two down, doesn’t mean you should. Cropped sweaters are a fun way to show off a little-patterned top underneath or to add a layer to those days that start off chilly but warm up just as you’re heading out for the afternoon. Balance these boxy tops with a slim bottom or leggings with boots.

No room for another sweater? You may be holding on to some that–be honest–need a new home. Take a look at your sweater collection. That’s right, get them all out of your closet. Lay them all out on your bed and assess the situation. Are there some that you never wear–that another women might need or enjoy more than you? Give away the ones that feel tired to you, that you don’t feel great in. Think about a woman from your local shelter gratefully receiving it. Then take a look at what’s left so you aren’t tempted to buy a new sweater that looks oddly similar to the ones you already have.

Leggings You’ll Love

Here’s an item of clothing where the saying is so true, “You get what you pay for.” A good pair of black leggings are a fall closet staple. Wear them with a sweater, under a cute tunic, grounding a long cardigan or jacket. There are a million possibilities. And if you love them, you may want to wear them multiple times a week. So invest in a quality brand that is designed to look good from all angles, will launder and wear well for the duration. And dare I say, your workout leggings should not be your “get dressed” leggings. Zippers at the ankles or a little skirt for extra coverage are an added bonus.

Bring on the Blazer

If you’re feeling like your mom wardrobe could use an upgrade this season, go for a blazer. You’ll be amazed at how fun it is to dress up for a girls night out with a pair of heels or sassy boots. And you’ll be equally grateful to throw it on with a basic white tee and your favorite jewelry to volunteer in your kiddo’s classroom. Corduroy has made a comeback. A black blazer is classic and will never let you down. A moto-style jacket appeals to the rebel in us all.
