Spring Fashion Tips for the Haute Momma

Momming is a workout. You start the day running–not necessarily by choice–but more likely after the crazy toddler that made his way out the back door while you were changing a load of laundry. The last thing on your priority list might be whether you look like a runway model as you’re wiping down the highchair for the third time today.

But there’s a scientific connection between how we feel and what we wear.

So whether you’re surprising your man with a date night or just want to feel like yourself again, here are a few realistic fashion trends and tips to try this spring.

After having five kids and spending almost eight years in nursing bras and overalls (the yoga pants of the 90s), I found myself in a comfy fashion rut. It was like coming out of a fog when I decided I was ready to give away my maternity clothes and get on with life.

Now, between working as a part-time stylist and having teenage daughters, I have learned a few things about making the most of my body type and the fun of trying a new fashion trend here and there.

Denim Update

First, splurge on a pair of good quality, on-trend jeans. You’re going to wear them multiple times a week, so don’t skimp here. Higher waist jeans are back–hallelujah. Skinny jeans are on their way out–again, hallelujah. Choose a lighter wash, a frayed hem, a colored denim, light deconstruction–or even “reconstruction” or patches on your denim.

Heavy Petal

Florals are always on-trend for spring. This year, look for hints of “heavy petal,” like bell sleeves, ruffles, or even an unexpected floral printed on top of a striped oxford shirt like this one

Cold Shoulder

Sleeve and shoulder details are still showing up in boutiques around town as well as on the runways. The “cold shoulder” look is fun and flirty. Bows on shoulders, off-shoulder 80’s looks, and even a little puffy sleeve will freshen up your look. Try a floral top with a pair of edgy, destructed jeans or balance it out with an olive green cargo pant or the “dapper darling” look of a loafer, a short boot or a Flagstaff favorite, your go-to Birkenstocks

Stop, tuck and roll.

Believe it or not, doing a tiny front tuck of your favorite t-shirt takes just a second, is really flattering and adds that effortless look that says, “I tried, but not too hard.” And instead of rolling your jeans, try a deep cuff or a messy double roll this season

Don’t want to take your chances with online ordering or deal with the drama of shopping with kids in tow? Get in touch with a local stylist, like me! There are clothing companies with a variety of styles and trained stylists who will bring the clothes to you or invite you over for a personal shopping appointment. Sounds dreamy, right?

So, if you’re ready to emerge from post-baby fashion fog, try a few of these tips and trends this spring.
